Cross River State Government Celebrates World Consumer Rights Day In Calabar, Award Key players..
The Cross River State Government has commemorated World Consumer Rights Day, aligning with the global theme “A Just Transition To Sustainable Lifestyle”, which emphasized the need for sustainable and healthy lifestyle choices accessible and affordable to all consumers.
In an address, the Director General of the Agency, Dr. Charles Ushie noted that, the world consumer rights day was part of efforts geared towards reinforcing consumer rights with shared commitment to ensuring fairness ,safety and justice.
Dr. Ushie stated that the consumer protection agency plays pivotal roles in safeguarding consumer’s interest, ensuring business growth and ethical standards to provide quality goods and services with the highest level of safety.
In a paper presentation, the Director of Education in the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) south south zone, Mr. Emeka Anyanwu described consumer protection as all encompassing, stressing that everyone has the right to contribute collectively to consumer protection.
He enumerated the rights of the consumers to include, compensation to consumers for poor services by the service providers ranging from producers, transport companies, flight operators, electronic manufacturers and the hospitality industry.
A lecturer from Cross River State College of Health Technology, Calabar, Mrs. Felicia Okon who delivered a lecture on the effects of consuming fake and expired products, illustrated methods of detecting substandard and expired products.
Mrs. Okon urged the public to abstain from counterfeit and expired products a day after the expiration date as the consumption of pharmaceutical products, beverages, cosmetics and packed food after expiration poses a threat to human health.
A guest at the event, Mr. John Otu, commended the Cross River State Consumer Protection Agency under the leadership of Dr. Charles Ushie for being proactive and committed in their lifesaving tasks.
Mr. Otu charged the government to furnish the agency with efficient operational gadgets, vehicles and other logistics across the state to enable it perform optimally.
He also expressed concern over extortion from cooperate bodies such as network service providers and flight operators, including market unions and called for government intervention.
The event also featured recognizing of excellence in consumer services through presentation of various consumer protection and outstanding consumer service awards to key players in the consumer industry including, the Chairman of Hoteliers Association in Cross River State . Mr Charles Ogar, Dr. Henry Okweh CEO of Hogis hotels, the Cross River State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps( NSCDC) Dr. Charles Brown, the Manager of Spar Market, Crispy Chicken, Marian Water among others.
