UNICAL VC Receives Multi-Million Naira Worth of Law Books Donation

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has received a donation of law books worth millions of naira from the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

Speaking at a brief presentation ceremony in the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room, Prof. Obi commended the Deputy Speaker’s benevolence, describing the event as historic.

Hear her; “Today our Deputy Speaker is making another history. Not long ago, he was here as the 37th Convocation/Golden Anniversary Lecturer where he performed the ground breaking ceremony for a proposed state of the art Convocation Arena”.

The Vice Chancellor expressed the gratitude of the University Management to the Deputy Speaker and indeed the entire Law Class of ’98 for giving back to their Alma Mater and for adding colour to the University’s golden jubilee celebrations.

Prof. Obi who lauded the Deputy Speaker in glowing terms described him as ‘a 3- Star General’, ‘a very proud alumnus of the University of Calabar’ and ‘a talk and do politician’.

“I’m happy and excited! With what the Senate President and the Deputy Speaker have done for the law faculty, we are 90% sure of full accreditation in the forthcoming exercise”, she added.

The Ag. Dean of Law, Dr. Michael Takim Otu said the event is a fulfillment of what the faculty has earnestly been asking for.

This is even as he said the commendable contribution of the Deputy Speaker to the growth of the faculty as exemplified by the books donation will immensely assist not only for accreditation purposes, but is also a veritable resource for academics and research.

The Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representative, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu while presenting the books lauded the Vice Chancellor for the work she is doing in the University, saying, ‘you have indeed opened the door for other women’.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Hart, Esq, the Deputy Speaker said he is a proud alumnus who has been shaped by the institution.

“We have returned to sow into the soil that nurtured us”, he said.

Rt. Hon Kalu said his firm belief that education is key to individual and national development remains unwavering, adding that, he will continue to do his utmost to advance the course.

The Legislator said the donation is a sequel to the Dean’s request for assistance in that regard.

The books donated include a large number of weekly law reports and myriads of volumes of Law Books in diverse subjects in law.
