EBHA adopts a motion, to mandate EEDC to reduce their outrageous bills
Moving a motion of urgent public importance during the plenary of Wednesday, the Member representing Ebonyi North West State Constituency, Hon. Aloysius Nwodo said that the motion arose as a result of public outcry, complain and unsettlement of the people as a result of over-billing, fraudulent activities, and non supply of prepaid meters to the consumers of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the State, and called the power distribution company, to supply prepaid meters and also reduce the way they charge arrears to the consumers of the power supply in the State, so as alleviate the sufferings of the people.
“I rise to State that EEDC should take note of the cry of Ebonyi people who are the consumers of the power they supply, because the over-billing and fraudulent activities going on through the service, is the one that has made the talk of the town. We appeal Mr Speaker, that EEDC be mindful and supply to consumers the prepaid meters which is supplied to other states. It should be supplied to them in affordable rate. That EEDC should be mindful of the way they bill the consumers of electricity in Ebonyi. Mr Speaker, I call on the EEDC to reduce the way they charge so called arrears. It is a thing that has impoverished our people.”
The Leader of the House, Chief Kingsley Ikoro, narrated the ordeals of the consumers of EEDC in the State, and enjoined the power distribution company to make the prepared meters available to the customers, so as to enable the users to control the quantity they use, and also reduce the tariff.
“We are human beings, we use this power because we can’t do without electricity, but let the needful be done. Let the tariff be brought down.”
The Member representing Edda East State Constituency, Hon. Stephen Orji Igwe, the Member representing Abakaliki North State Constituency, Hon. Victor Chidi Nwoke, and the Member representing Ivo State Constituency, Hon. Onyebuchi Ogbadu, aligned their contributions in favor of the motion, and called the EEDC to reduce the tariff, to enable consumers to enjoy their services in the State.
The Speaker of the House, Chief Moses Odunwa, highlighted the expectations of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the State, and however, put the motion on a voice votes, and it was unanimously accepted. He directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs Edene Uche Blessing, to write a memo, conveying the appropriate authority, the resolution of Ebonyi State House of Assembly.
“We have collectively agreed here that our motion be sent to appropriate quarters;
i. A call on EEDC to moderate their outrageous bill to allow people to still use their services. To this end, we are talking about having a human face.
ii. That prepaid meters be made more affordable and available to the Consumers in Ebonyi State.
iii. We urge the Managers of EEDC to look into the fraudulent activities of their workers who force their customers to donate materials procured by them.
iv. We are calling the National Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee properly what is going on in the provision of Electricity, generally in Nigeria, especially here in Ebonyi State.”
